How To Clean the Chain

Clean the chain

  1. Matters needing attention
Do not directly soak the chain in strong acid and strong alkaline cleaning agents such as diesel, gasoline, kerosene, WD-40 and degreasing agent, because the inner ring bearing of the chain is filled with high-viscosity oil, once it is washed off Afterwards, it will make the inner ring dry, no matter how much low-viscosity chain oil is added afterwards, it will not help.
  2. Suggested cleaning method
Hot soapy water, hand sanitizer, or a discarded toothbrush or a slightly harder brush, can be washed directly with water. The cleaning effect is not very good, and it needs to be wiped dry after cleaning, otherwise it will rust.
Special chain cleaners: generally imported products, with good cleaning effect and good lubrication effect. They are sold in professional car shops, but the price is more expensive. Taobao also sells them. Bikers with better economic foundations can consider it.
Metal powder: Find a larger container, take a spoonful and rinse with boiling water, remove the chain and put it in the water to clean it with a harder brush. Advantages: It can easily clean the oil stains on the chain, and generally does not clean the butter in the inner ring, it is not irritating, and does not hurt your hands. This thing is often used by masters who do mechanical work to wash their hands. , The security is very strong. You can buy them in larger hardware stores. Disadvantages: Since the auxiliary is water, the chain must be wiped or dried after cleaning, which takes a long time.
Washing the chain with metal powder is my usual cleaning method. I personally feel that the effect is better. I recommend it to all riders. If any rider has objections to this cleaning method, I can give advice. Bikers who need to remove the chain frequently for cleaning are advised to install a magic buckle, which saves time and effort.
  3. Lubrication of the chain
After each cleaning, wiping or cleaning the chain with solvent, be sure to add lubricating oil, and make sure that the chain is dry before adding lubricating oil. First, penetrate the lubricating oil into the bearing part of the chain, and then let it become viscous or dry. This can surely lubricate the parts of the chain that are easy to wear (the two joints on both sides). A good lubricating oil feels like water at first and is easy to penetrate, but after a while it will become thicker or dry, which can provide long-lasting lubrication. After applying the lubricating oil, use a dry cloth to wipe the excess oil on the chain to avoid the adhesion of dirt and dust. Before reinstalling the chain, remember to clean the interconnection of the chain to make sure that there is no dirt left. After the chain is cleaned, some lubricating oil must be applied to the inside and outside of the shaft when assembling the magic button.

Precautions
For cars with rear derailleur, switch the chain to the smallest wheel pair before hitting the chain. This way, the chain is loose and easy to operate, and it is not easy to “bounce” after being cut off.
After the chain is cleaned and refueled, slowly turn the chain link upside down, and the chain links coming out of the back dial should be able to be straightened. If some chain links still maintain a certain angle, it means that it is not moving smoothly and is a dead knot. adjust. It is found that the damaged chain link must be replaced in time. It is recommended to strictly distinguish the three types of pins and use the connecting pin for the maintenance of the chain.
Pay attention to the level of the chain driver, so that it is not easy to twist the thimble. Careful use of tools can not only protect the tools, but also achieve good results. Otherwise, the tools are easily damaged, and the damaged tools are more likely to damage the parts. That is a vicious circle.
